Internships are offered to students or recent graduates to provide supervised practical training. Internships can lead to favourable eventual careers for candidates willing to make sacrifices.
When a student leaves University at present, they take steps to find a suitable career. Some consult career advisers at University. The career advisers are often not fully aware of the various options available in the job market due to ever changing careers. Some students take the following other approaches to find work:
• Seek professional help to generate detailed Curriculum Vitae. This step is critical since some providers develop individual CV without using a pre-determined format or template.
• Seek professional help to prepare a candidate profile.
• Prepare competency statements identifying the competencies gained in life during university days. (This is generally rare for fresh graduates)
These steps are certainly useful for someone out of University to find appropriate work. And yet many students do not obtain the right advice. For example:
• 75% of vacant positions are filled without advertising. The right advise is required to develop strategies to approach this market.
• 25% of vacant positions get advertised. Some positions are advertised by more than one recruitment agency.
• To find the right job, you have to develop a strategy which targets both these markets.
For these reasons, an internship is an important step towards finding work. Foreign Internships are therefore considered very attractive for someone especially from Europe wanting to end up in a lucrative career opportunity back in their country. The advantages of such a training include:
• Supervised training where you learn and get mentored from someone experienced in your selected field.
• Practical experience in the field. This practical experience can sometimes be through meeting customers and identifying ways of dealing with them.
• Identified opportunities for a future career. Sometimes, when you work as an Intern, you become aware of other related career opportunities.
• Potential for further advancement and career opportunities through an internship.
• Internships provide strong foothold for permanent employment.
• An internship with a foreign company recorded in your CV/Resume is impressive for any company that reviews your CV and application in future.
• Internships are a gateway for permanent roles, sometimes internationally.
• Providing a unique opportunity for networking, establishing contacts and identifying additional things you can do to add value to your career. These include writing articles or books to be recognised as an expert in your chosen area.
• Internships can also provide a useful forum for you to start your own small business which then sets you apart from others.
But why listen to me. Here are the comments of a British Intern who undertook his Internship in Australia recently.
I undertook an Internship in Sydney for the position of Marketing Assistant. The training has been extremely beneficial and useful. I was provided supervised training initially. Eventually, I created for the organisation, a range of templates and marketing material finding several advertising options that the organisation was not previously using. I find that my efforts have opened new doors fort this organisation. From an internship perspective, I learnt a great deal. I have no hesitation in recommending an internship to anyone wanting to kick start their career.
